Pellets are becoming a popular alternative to wood and charcoal. So, which company produces wood pellets?

How are wood pellets made?

To make wood pellets, manufacturers remove moisture from the incoming wood fibers, grind the fibers into dust, and then press the dust into small cylinders – pellets – typically 6 or 8 mm in diameter and up to 40 mm in length. The process uses heat to cause lignin, a natural polymer found in wood, to act as the glue that holds the compressed particles together.

The result is a dry, highly compressed product with a high energy content that is easy to handle and can be efficiently transported over long distances.

Efficient, sustainable energy

Wood pellets are used in everyday life and industry. Many people in cooler climates around the world use wood pellet boilers or stoves for heat. Today’s modern boilers are so automated that they require no human operators or maintenance other than loading pellets in the winter, starting the system at the push of a button and removing the ash six months later.

What is the production process of wood pellets?

Untreated wood chips and slag are first passed through a shredder to reduce the size of the material. These smaller pieces are then ground into wood fibers, or in some cases, into a fine powder. The wood fibers are then scanned with a magnet to remove any metal that may have gotten into the wood at any stage of the process.
The excess moisture is then removed from the wood fibers through a drying process, reducing the wood’s moisture content to 6.9%.
After the drying process, the wood can be turned into pellets using a pellet mill. A pellet mill is a large press that passes wood fibers through a die to produce pellets of the desired size. The process involves heat and extreme pressure to push the wood fibers through particle-sized holes in the mold so that the particles are on the other side. Heating is an important aspect of the process to help the particles retain their shape after leaving the back of the mold.
